The Job Guide

Patch a drywall hole so it disappears.

The short answerTo patch a hole in drywall, fill nail holes with spackle. For holes up to about 6 inches, stick a self-adhesive mesh or metal patch over the hole. For anything bigger, screw a piece of drywall to backing cleats. Spread thin coats of joint compound or spackle with a 6-inch knife, feathering past the edges, and let each coat dry. Sand smooth between coats, then prime and paint. Plan on 2–3 thin coats.

Doorknob dents, anchor holes and move-out damage are the most common wall repairs. The trick is thin coats and patient sanding, not one thick coat.

The Method

Step by step, start to finish.

  1. 01

    Size up the hole

Under 1/2 in.: spackle only. Up to about 6 in.: self-adhesive patch. Bigger: cut in a drywall patch.

  2. 02

    Trim & clean

Cut away loose paper and crumbled gypsum with a utility knife and wipe off dust.

  3. 03

    Patch it

Center the adhesive patch over the hole, or screw a drywall piece to wood cleats behind the opening.

  4. 04

    First thin coat

Spread compound over the patch with the 6-inch knife, feathering 2–3 in. past the edges.

  5. 05

    Dry & sand

Let it dry fully, then sand lightly. Wipe the dust off.

  6. 06

    Repeat, prime, paint

Add a second and third thin, wider coat. Sand, prime the patch, then paint.

Good Questions

Before you start.

Spackle or joint compound?

Spackle for small holes and quick fixes. Joint compound is better for larger patches because it sands easily over a wide area.

Why does my patch show through the paint?

Usually the edges weren't feathered wide enough or the patch wasn't primed. Feather each coat wider and spot-prime before painting.

Do I need to texture?

If your walls are textured, match it with spray-can texture after the final coat, before priming.
