The Job Guide

Peel-and-stick wallpaper, without bubbles.

The short answerTo hang peel-and-stick wallpaper, start with a clean, smooth, fully cured wall and draw a plumb line with a level. Cut panels 2–3 inches long, peel the top few inches of backing, and stick the panel at the ceiling along your line. Pull the backing down a little at a time while smoothing from the center out with a squeegee. Match the pattern on each next panel and trim the excess with a sharp blade. An accent wall takes 2–4 hours.

Peel-and-stick wallpaper is the renter-friendly way to add pattern. Start straight and smooth as you go.

The Method

Step by step, start to finish.

  1. 01

    Prep the wall

Wash off dust and grease and let it dry. New paint needs about 4 weeks to cure.

  2. 02

    Draw a plumb line

Mark a vertical line one panel width from the corner. Walls and corners are rarely straight.

  3. 03

    Hang the first panel

Peel a few inches, align with the line, leave 2" extra at the ceiling, and smooth down as you peel.

  4. 04

    Match the pattern

Line up the next panel's pattern before sticking. Overlap or butt seams per the maker.

  5. 05

    Trim

Trim ceiling, baseboard and outlet edges with a fresh blade against a straightedge.

  6. 06

    Final press

Go over every seam with the smoother and reinstall the covers.

Good Questions

Before you start.

Does it work on textured walls?

Not well. Adhesive needs a smooth, satin or eggshell surface. Heavy texture or flat paint can cause lifting.

Will it peel paint off when removed?

It's designed to come off cleanly from cured, good-quality paint, but some paints lift. Test a corner first.

How much do I need?

Measure wall width x height, add about 15% for pattern matching, and divide by the roll's coverage.
