The Job Guide

Paint a room, with clean, even coats.

The short answerTo paint a room, clear and cover the floor, patch and sand holes, and wipe the walls clean. Tape trim if you need to, then cut in the edges with an angled brush and roll the walls in 3-foot sections, keeping a wet edge. Paint the ceiling first, then walls, then trim. Let the first coat dry per the can and apply a second. A typical bedroom takes a day.

Paint is the highest-impact, lowest-cost upgrade in any room. Good tools matter more than technique. Here's the kit we'd buy and the order pros work in.

The Method

Step by step, start to finish.

  1. 01

    Clear & protect

Move furniture to the center, cover the floor, and remove switch plates.

  2. 02

    Patch & clean

Fill holes, sand smooth, and wipe the walls. Prime any patches.

  3. 03

    Tape (optional)

Tape trim and ceilings if your hand isn't steady.

  4. 04

    Cut in

Brush a 2–3" band along ceilings, corners and trim.

  5. 05

    Roll the walls

Roll in a W pattern, 3 ft at a time, and keep a wet edge to avoid lap marks.

  6. 06

    Second coat & cleanup

Recoat after the can's dry time, pull tape while the paint is slightly soft, and clean the tools.

Good Questions

Before you start.

How much paint do I need?

About one gallon per 350–400 sq ft per coat. Check the coverage on the can.

Do I need primer?

Not over sound, similar-color paint with a paint-and-primer product. Prime patches, stains, bare drywall and dramatic color changes.

Which sheen for walls?

Eggshell or satin for most rooms. Flat hides flaws but is harder to clean; semi-gloss is for trim.
