The Job Guide

Floating shelves, level and rock solid.

The short answerTo install floating shelves, find and mark the studs, then mark the shelf height with a level. Screw the hidden bracket or cleat into at least two studs (or into anchors rated for the load if there are no studs), checking level before the final screws. Slide the shelf over the bracket and lock it with the set screws underneath. One shelf takes about an hour.

Floating shelves look simple, but they only hold weight when the bracket is in studs. A good stud finder and level do most of the work.

The Method

Step by step, start to finish.

  1. 01

    Find the studs

Scan the wall and mark stud centers on painter's tape.

  2. 02

    Mark the height

Mark the bracket line with a level. Leave 12–16" between stacked shelves.

  3. 03

    Drill pilot holes

Hold the bracket on the line and drill pilot holes at stud marks.

  4. 04

    Fasten the bracket

Drive screws into studs, checking level before the last ones. Use rated anchors only where no stud lands.

  5. 05

    Slide the shelf on

Push the shelf onto the rods or cleat until it meets the wall.

  6. 06

    Lock it

Drive the set screws through the bottom of the shelf and load it gradually.

Good Questions

Before you start.

How much weight can a floating shelf hold?

It depends on the bracket and on hitting studs. Check the maker's rating, which assumes stud mounting.

Can I use drywall anchors?

Only anchors rated for the load, and expect much lower capacity than studs. Use them for light, decorative shelves.

What if the wall isn't flat?

Shim the bracket so it sits plumb, or the shelf will tip forward.
