The Job Guide

Recaulk a tub or shower, crisp and watertight.

The short answerTo recaulk a tub or shower, cut and scrape out all the old caulk, clean the joint (rubbing alcohol works well), and let it dry completely. Tape both sides of the joint, cut the tube tip small, and run one steady bead of 100% silicone. Smooth it with a wet finger, pull the tape while the caulk is wet, and keep water off it for at least 24 hours, or as long as the tube says.

Moldy, cracked caulk lets water behind the tub. New silicone is a cheap, one-evening fix. The secret is complete removal and a dry joint.

The Method

Step by step, start to finish.

  1. 01

    Cut out old caulk

Slice along both edges of the old bead with a utility knife, then peel and scrape it out.

  2. 02

    Clean & dry

Scrub off residue and mildew, wipe with rubbing alcohol, and let the joint dry fully (overnight is best).

  3. 03

    Tape the joint

Run painter's tape on the wall and the tub, leaving a gap the width of the bead you want.

  4. 04

    Run the bead

Cut the tip small, hold the gun at a steady angle, and push one continuous bead into the joint.

  5. 05

    Tool it

Smooth with a wet fingertip in one pass, then pull the tape away at an angle while the caulk is wet.

  6. 06

    Let it cure

Keep water off for the time on the tube, typically 24 hours for silicone.

Good Questions

Before you start.

Silicone or latex caulk for a tub?

100% silicone lasts longer and stays flexible in wet areas. Latex is easier to tool and paintable but wears faster in a shower.

Can I caulk over old caulk?

No. New caulk won't bond to old silicone and mold stays trapped underneath. Remove it all.

Should I fill the tub first?

Many pros fill the tub with water before caulking so the joint is at its widest when the caulk cures.
