Small Project

A raised garden bed, set up in an afternoon.

The short answerTo build a raised garden bed, choose a level spot with 6–8 hours of sun near a hose. Keep the bed no wider than 4 feet so you can reach the middle, and use rot-resistant cedar or a raised-bed kit. Assemble the frame, level it, lay cardboard to smother grass, then fill with raised-bed or garden soil mixed with compost. Volume in cubic feet is length × width × depth in feet. Fall is a great time to build and fill so the soil settles before spring.

Raised beds warm up faster, drain better and save your back. The two decisions that matter most: the location and the soil you fill it with.

The Method

Step by step, start to finish.

  1. 01

    Pick the spot

Full sun (6–8 hrs), level ground, close to water, and away from tree roots and utilities.

  2. 02

    Size it right

No wider than 4 ft (3 ft if against a fence). Leave 18–24 in. paths between beds.

  3. 03

    Assemble the frame

Build the kit, or cut cedar boards and screw the corners to 4x4 posts.

  4. 04

    Level & smother

Level the frame and lay cardboard on grass inside it to block weeds.

  5. 05

    Fill with good soil

Fill with garden or raised-bed soil plus compost. Calculate cubic feet as L × W × D.

  6. 06

    Water & plant

Water to settle the soil, top it up, then plant or mulch it for spring.

Good Questions

Before you start.

Is pressure-treated wood safe for vegetables?

Modern treated lumber is widely used, but many gardeners prefer cedar or a lined bed for peace of mind. Avoid old railroad ties and creosote.

How deep should a raised bed be?

At least 6–12 inches for most vegetables. Deeper beds suit root crops like carrots.

How much soil do I need?

Multiply length × width × depth in feet. A 4 × 8 × 1 ft bed needs about 32 cubic feet.
