The Job Guide

Seal a drafty door, in an hour.

The short answerTo weatherstrip a door, find the leaks by feeling for drafts or closing the door on a slip of paper. Pull out worn kerf-style strips and press new ones into the groove in the jamb, or apply self-stick foam on a clean, dry stop if there's no groove. Then add or replace the door sweep at the bottom so it just touches the threshold. The door should close with light pressure and no light showing.

Gaps around an exterior door leak heat, noise and bugs. New weatherstripping and a sweep are cheap and take about an hour.

The Method

Step by step, start to finish.

  1. 01

    Find the gaps

Close the door on paper at several points. Easy pull-out means a gap. Look for daylight.

  2. 02

    Remove old strips

Pull out worn kerf strips, or scrape off old foam and adhesive.

  3. 03

    Clean the jamb

Wipe the stop and jamb so new adhesive or strips seat fully.

  4. 04

    Install new strips

Press kerf strips into the groove (or apply foam tape to the stop). Cut to length with a knife.

  5. 05

    Add the sweep

Hold the sweep so it just touches the threshold, mark, drill pilot holes and screw it on.

  6. 06

    Test

The door should latch with light pressure. Adjust the strike plate or sweep height if needed.

Good Questions

Before you start.

Kerf or foam weatherstrip?

If the jamb has a narrow groove, use kerf strips. If not, use compression foam or V-strip on the stop.

Door is hard to close after weatherstripping?

The strip is too thick. Use a thinner profile or adjust the strike plate.

Sweep or threshold?

Try a sweep first. If the threshold is adjustable, raise it slightly; replace it if it's damaged.
