The Job Guide

New cabinet pulls, perfectly aligned.

The short answerTo replace cabinet hardware, measure the center-to-center spacing of your existing holes and buy pulls that match, so there's no drilling. For new holes, use a hardware jig so every pull lands in the same spot. Mark, drill straight through from the front with a sharp bit and a scrap block behind, then fasten the pulls from inside without overtightening. A kitchen takes 2–4 hours.

New pulls are a weekend-sized kitchen refresh. The only hard part is consistency, and a $30 jig solves that.

The Method

Step by step, start to finish.

  1. 01

    Measure spacing

Measure center-to-center of existing holes. Matching it avoids new holes.

  2. 02

    Set the jig

Set the jig for the pull size and position, then test on one door.

  3. 03

    Drill

Drill straight through from the front with a scrap block behind to stop blowout.

  4. 04

    Fill old holes

If spacing changes, fill old holes with wood filler, or choose a backplate to cover them.

  5. 05

    Fasten

Insert screws from inside and snug them. Overtightening strips threads.

  6. 06

    Check alignment

Close everything and eyeball each row. Small tweaks are easiest before the next door.

Good Questions

Before you start.

What size pulls should I buy?

Common hole spacings are 3", 3.75" (96 mm) and 5" (128 mm). Matching yours avoids drilling.

Where do pulls go on doors?

Usually vertical on the stile opposite the hinge, 2–3" from the corner. Center drawer pulls.

Will standard screws fit?

Most pulls include 1" screws. Thicker drawer fronts may need longer 8-32 screws.
