The Job Guide

Keep pipes from freezing, before the cold snap.

The short answerTo prevent frozen pipes, insulate exposed pipes in unheated spaces (crawlspaces, garages, attics, exterior walls) with foam sleeves, disconnect hoses and cover outdoor faucets, and shut off and drain outdoor lines if you have an interior valve. During a deep freeze, let a faucet drip, open cabinet doors on exterior walls, and keep the heat at 55°F or higher even when you're away. Use a UL-listed heat cable on pipes that freeze repeatedly.

A burst pipe is one of the most expensive surprises a house can deliver. An hour and a few dollars of foam before winter is cheap insurance.

The Method

Step by step, start to finish.

  1. 01

    Find vulnerable pipes

Check crawlspaces, garages, attics, and sink cabinets on exterior walls.

  2. 02

    Insulate

Fit foam sleeves over exposed pipe, seal the slit, and tape joints and elbows.

  3. 03

    Outdoor faucets

Disconnect hoses, close the interior shutoff if you have one, drain the line, and cover the bib.

  4. 04

    Seal drafts

Caulk or foam gaps where cold air reaches pipes, such as sill plates and wall penetrations.

  5. 05

    During a freeze

Drip a faucet on exterior walls, open sink cabinets, and keep heat at 55°F+.

Good Questions

Before you start.

How cold before pipes freeze?

There's no single number. Risk rises in a hard freeze, especially for pipes in unheated spaces or exterior walls, so prepare before the first deep cold snap.

Should I drip faucets?

Yes, in a deep freeze. Moving water and relieved pressure reduce the chance of a burst.

What if a pipe is already frozen?

Keep the faucet open and warm the pipe with a hair dryer or heating pad. Never use an open flame. Call a plumber if you can't find or reach it.
