The Job Guide

A peel-and-stick backsplash, done in an afternoon.

The short answerTo install a peel-and-stick backsplash, turn off the power and remove outlet covers, then degrease the wall and let it dry. Dry-lay the tiles to center the pattern, start at a bottom corner along a level line, and peel the backing a little at a time while you smooth the tile down. Trim around outlets with a sharp utility knife and press every tile firmly. Most kitchens take 2–4 hours.

Peel-and-stick is the fastest, cheapest way to change a kitchen's look, and it's renter-friendly. It's not for direct water areas like a shower. Here's the kit and the order that gives you tight seams.

The Method

Step by step, start to finish.

  1. 01

    Power off & prep

Turn off the breaker, remove outlet and switch covers, and pull any nails or hooks.

  2. 02

    Degrease

Wash the wall with degreaser, rinse, and let it dry fully. Fresh paint needs 3–4 weeks to cure first.

  3. 03

    Layout

Dry-lay a row on the counter to center the pattern. Mark a level line for the first row.

  4. 04

    Stick & smooth

Peel a few inches of backing, align the tile, then smooth outward with the squeegee as you remove the rest.

  5. 05

    Trim around outlets

Mark the outlet box on the tile and cut with a fresh utility knife blade on a scrap board.

  6. 06

    Finish edges

Press every seam again, reinstall covers (use box extenders if needed), and caulk the countertop edge if splashes are likely.

Good Questions

Before you start.

Can it go over existing tile?

Usually, if the old tile is flat, clean and the grout lines are shallow. Deep or rough grout lines can telegraph through.

Is peel-and-stick waterproof?

It's water-resistant, fine behind a kitchen sink, but not meant for direct water like a shower wall.

Will it damage the wall when removed?

It can pull paint off drywall. Renters often stick it to a thin panel or existing tile instead.
